Paschim Medinipur is one of the district of the state of West Bengal, India. It was formed on January 1, 2002 after the Partition of Midnapore into Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur.

The district has 4 sub-divisions: Kharagpur, Midnapore, Jhargram and Ghatal.The town used to be belong to the Midnapore District until the Partition of Midnapore. The undivided Midnapore district had been, at one time, the largest district in West Bengal and indeed, all of India.
