This island is one of the greatest Hindu pilgrimage centers in India. Every year on Maker Sankranti (Mid January), the spot near the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal comes alive with the Gangasagar Mela (fair). Thousands of pilgrims from all corners of the country congregate here for a holy dip. The island also has the Kapil Muni temple.
